About Salst: Salst is a city in which I have tried some different things. Among others I have recorded the public transport network at different stages. Furthermore various planning aspects have been tested in this multiplayer map:

  • Some smaller maps have been assigned to a big map. Each of these groups composing their own region.
  • For the certain regions RROPs (Regionale Raumordnungs-programme, which means regional planning and development acts) have been developed.
  • In those RROPs the admissibility of land uses and contruction types is constituted.
  • Is one's own city located in the region of another player, he has to account to the RROP while building the city.
  • etc.
The text of the RROP for the City of Salst and the surrounding smaller municipalities can be downloaded as PDF on the right. The assessments in this RROP are, of course, fitted to the gameplay of SimCity. But also in a real existing RROP quite similar assessments are possible. The plan of the RROP is also downloadable as a jpeg-graphic on the left side. In the Planning-Area a contribution to the topic "RROP" is projected.

Made it to 7.000 inhabitants after 5 years of play...

All beginnings are difficult. Though, after five years of playing the industrial city of Salst already inhabited 7.000 people. The housing was simple, mostly row houses. The steeple emerged proudly from the city's skyline.

The Old Town after 5 years

After a hundred years played already a metropolis...

A 100 years later the population has grown clearly. The city has spread to the west and north explictly. The former industrial estate has been repressed to the greatest possible extent or rather been tranformed to high-tech-businesses. In the north a short time ago the central station and an airport have been developed.

Capturing the public transport network...

After a hundred years played a quite remarkable rapid trandsit network has been developed, which I have captured as a sketch on the right.

Salst Public Transport Association (VVS) - We are mobilising...

These sketches have been the basis for a network plan, which is shown in every station if the Salst Public Transport Association. The rapid transit lines are supportet by a bus network, that serves as a feeder on ther one hand and on the other hand provides cross and tangetial linkages. A newer version of the network plan is regrettably not available by now.

Becoming a major city...

A hundred years after the city's founding, the number of inhabitants has remarkably increased. The city has spread to the west and the north explicitly. The former industrial area has been pushed back heavily or was conerted into High-Tech Businesses. In the north, not long ago, central station and aiport have been built.

The embedding of the central station...

Between the Sound of Salster and the Barossee (the small lake a little further north) a four-track railway line was built, which connects the central station in east-west direction across the narrow tongue of land.

Around the central station happend a lot...

About 150 years later the shape of the districts surrounding the cental station has changed completely. The last remaining parts of the former industrial area of Udsalst were converted into modern office- and business-uses. The density in the north of the central station (at the bottom of the picture) has increased. A new inner city is formed.

In Hohenschönhausen-Gartenstadt...

...one can live quietly but also convenient for traffic. On the south-western edge of the City of Salst a homogeneously planned and symmetrically developed high-class residential area was built. A motorway and a regional train line connect the district to the city and the nearby airport.

Some little different outer-city council estate

A famous planning office...

In this exposed place I have founded my planning office. In both of the tower 2.400 planners are working. The main parts of the workers are oscillating by the public transport (connection to regional-, subway- and regional-train-services).

Fünfdorf-Hagenberg...

The district of Fünfdorf-Hagenberg provides a lot of opportunities for recreation and is located on the southern edge of Salst. The mostly low density and many big parks make the district one of the most popular residential area in the whole city.

A large traffic hub at the ferry port...

High traffic in the south of the district of Neustadt (feeder from the ferry harbour) needed a complete redesign of the traffic infrastructure. The high traffic and the emissions caused by it were followed by trading-down-processes in the surrounding blocks.

Along the Bahnhofsstraße (Station Road)...

...one lives in the midth of the big city jungle. Once the district was at the feet of the main church of St. Aposteln, today it is rather the other way round. The proud steeple fades between the new high rise buildings.

Building development along the Station Road

Somewhere trains have to be maintained...

That is the reason why an open area near the three-leg motorway interchange in the west of the city was built by big depots. Though, the capacities of the depots for maintenance and repairing are already reaching their limits and so the planners are looking for other possible locations for further depots.

Approach for a landing at Salst...

In the end here is an impression of the whole city from bird's view. The developments are quite stunning by now. The RROP manques almost all possibilities for a further spreading of the city, because additional areas for settlement are not designated at the moment. An update of the RROP seems currently usefull.
