Population: approx. 560.000 Commercial jobs: approx. 300.000 Industrial jobs: approx. 35.000 Districts: 26 Region: Multiplayer Year: 343 About Hølkashavn: The city spreads along both sides of the great river, the Hølkas, and includes a river island (which is called Kavnsø) in the city center. Caused by its location, the island is affected by many infrastructure routes. Nevertheless, here high quality constructions have been built and made Kavnsø a part of the city center. The city on both sides of the river is dominated by a quite hilly terrain, to the building had to be adjusted to it, by which some green spaces were created. |

Where it all began... Gammalby is the nucleus of todays metropolis Hølkashavn. Originally it was found as a settlement for industrial workers, there are remaining many structures of the early 20th. century in the Old Town of Gammalby. Today the district suffers from a decreas of the industrial economy on the one hand and its peripherality in the urban area of Hølkashavn. |
Structural change... West of the Old Town once a big industrial estate was situated, which was a main employer for the whole city. The tertiary (which means the development to a service society) and more and more strict environment saving plans caused the trandsference of factories ans such. So a belt of green spaces developed between the districts of Gammalby and Stevensted and the former industrial rail services had to be partly closed. |
Stevensted, or better: what is left of it... Until a few years ago the industrial estate of Stevensted spread from Gammalby in the west to Rydshøj in the east. Furthermore it included main parts of the district called Lønshøj. The newly fromed green belt ist to be conserved as an important space for recreation for the surrounding districts. A subsequent use for the future of the industial sites the turned to fallow land is not planned yet. |
A little paradise for leisurement... Gartø is the smallest district of Hølkashavn: On a small river island there are beautiful beaches, restaurants and touristical orientated retail. The island lies in the estuary mouth of the Hølkas and is only accesible by ferry. |
What a wondeful life... The mayors estate was once built at a magnificient axis, directly on the shore of the Hølkas. Because of the generous open spaces Kiddelsbjarg still is a very popular district of the city. In the north-west one can also see the station of Kiddelsbjarg. |
Structural change II... In the westside of Hænkalla, surrounding the underground station called Ste a modern business quarter has grown, which has outdone the industrial area of Stevensted being the most important employer south of the river Hølkas. |
And another business-district... At the splendor axis Szweizisk Vej, which is located between the districts of Vesterby and Lugarkønne, in the south-west of the city has been developed another office and business district. The development was benefited by the outstanding link to the public transport. |
Street canyons... The public space called Inrødpladsen is located topographically challenging and heavily loaded by traffic. It is a central place in the densily built district of Havneby (located noth of the Hølkas). The diner south of the square is, by the way, said to have the best Hot Dogs of the whole city. |
The old harbour rail... ...today goes right through the center of Havneby. This old alignment totday is used by the trains of the suburban train lines S3 and S31. In the railway arches today different establishments from the gastronomy-, handcraft- and reatil-sectors. So the old harbour rail has become a cultural and social center of the most populous district of Hølkashavn. |
Here all the planning gets done... In this gorgeous skyscraper at the Esbjerggatan the most famous planning agency of the city and probably of the whole region has found its headquarters. The Esbjerggatan devides Havneby from north to south and merges into the motorway, which is crossing the river Hølkas via the island of Kavnsø. |
Here the education takes place... The university was built directly on the shore of river Hölkas. It is surrounded by a big landscape park, which coincidental serves as a campus for the university. However, not only student find moments of leisure here, the more as the area is served well by the subway line U3 (just a little west you find the main intersection of public transport in Okkedalen -Station Okkevej-, where the lines U3 and S7 meet). |
A landmark... North of Okkedalen the Store Brøen (Big Bridge) overdraws the river Hølkas. This motorway bridge is an important landmark of the city and as well the probably most important traffic artery between the north and the south of Hølkashavn. In the east you can see the butt of Kavnsø, which is marked by a low density in this area. |
Today's city center... The river island Kavnsø is located in the center of the city and again and again had to face basical changings in history. Several traffic ways from north to south meet here on the island. That is why the bridges often had to be expanded and the traffic infrastructure needed more and more space of the small island. Today a new cluster out of cultural, educational, business and leisure uses has been developed. The rest of the island is characrerised by accomodation of differing densities. |
Latest developments - a tram is built... After the Tram-MOD has been released, the city counsil of Hølkashavn wanted to make use of the current developments and so they made way for some trial operations on two tram lines in the district of Nystad. For this project the city was able to inure to the benefit of the wide streets and open spaces, for which reason the building was comparatively cheap. The operations were so succesful, that actual plans for an enlargement of the nework are made. |
Also obstacles have been (partially lavish) overcome... Planning the first line extension to Havneby the planners had to face different problems, which, however, could be solved by special dalignments. In the picture you can see the solution for crossing a motorway close to a junction to the Store Brøen in the district of Storbrøckenkvart. By planning the tracks as an elevated light railway, ist was possible to built an almost intersection-free construction. |
Expansion plans... Like mentioned above, there are serious efforts to enlarge the the tram network. A conception for the rough course of the focused four further lines already has been set. |
