About Gotenburg: The city is entirely located on a large, roughly semi-circular island. The City is accessible by various ferry services and a highway, which runs via various bridges an other upstream islands. The city has a major seaport, while Gotenburg itself is still at a relatively early stage of development, so there are still many open spaces preserved on the island. The development of the city, is constantly updated on this page.

Housing and transport development...

The highway, running through the further developed south of the island, was planned together with the residential development in one step. It runs partly in a lowered position adjacent to the coast or in the minus-two-level under the buildings. Only for connection points it comes back to light. On the picture you can see a section between the western suburbs and Port City. The Highway is highly frequented, because of the good connection to the sea port.

The dock-workers housing estate...

The port city is located in the southwest of the port. It is a uniformly planned housing estate for dock-workers, only accessible by one-way streets. By subway or tram in you can reach here in a few minutes from the heart of the port, so it is still popular with the simple workers today.

Heart of the economy...

In Gotenburg, the major international port is the absolute core of the economy. In addition to the 12,000 jobs, created directly in the port, about 25,000 jobs in the office-sector is deeply connected to the port-industry. The huge basins are wrested from the sea by two large wharves. The lighthouses are known region-wide and well-visited landmarks.

A lightfire and itchy feet...

The southern lightfire of Gotenburg's harbour is a popular photo-point. In the early history of the city, emigration waves are recorded. The steamer took off from these docks. Here, in the middle of the harbour, very high-quality restaurants and stores have taken their space to manage the large crowds of tourists. They also visit the ne "House of the Immigrants", which ist located nearby.

And even more itchy feet...

At the northern edge of the harbour the cruise- and ferry-terminal is located, to be served by cruise ships from half of the world. Visitors appreciate the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the port city as well as the clean and pretty Old Town, which is situated high on the cliffs, overlooking the sea.

Modern western port...

The modern and recently completed western port, set in an attractive location, for this purpose the quay walls were extended by almost 80m. In the quay-area new rails were laid for the port railway, which can now drive onto the western port up to the cranes for loading and unloading. This could prevent a further increase of the truck volume in the port area.

Workers' Footballclub...

An industrial and port city would not be complete without a workers' football club. In the entertainment district, located north-west of the harbour, the stadium stands proud aside the Northern Port Avenue. It can be achieved by pedestrian bridges across the avenue from a public park. West of the stadium the stadium pools are located, a city-wide popular outdoor swimming-pool.

Making use of historical conditions...

East of Old Town with its historic city walls, the railway-line directed to the airport was relocated in the former moat. Underneath the Eastgate Avenue a station has been established, linking tram and metro, which is frequented highly.

Major traffic junction...

East of Old Town, the Great Western Road crosses the railway tracks and meets the Western Roundabout (Western Plate in vernacular). At the large roundabout several major roads meet each other. Not only a member of the Senate had already mentioned while the construction that you have to rebuilt the traffic junction completely in 10 years at the latest.

The Tower of Stars...

In the deep south of the island, a few years ago, the Tower of Stars was built by an international investor. The building is conveniently located next to a regional-train station, which is also connected to the tram. The residential building is very popular, especially at higher income-levels: successful shipowners, bankers, managers. The elevated penthouse apartments offer incredible views over the island and/or across the sea.

Development of the distcrict Nordervorfeld...

Not far from Old Town there were several, quite big areas free of any buildings in the distrct called Nordervorfeld, especially at the northern shore of the island. Therefore housing districts with many parks on two peninsulas should form the borders of the city. Because of the attractive location near the water, in both building areas also luxurious appartements have been planned. The villas were built to attract a new clientele of people to the city.

Binsenberg - a housing district gets formed...

First the Binsenberg-Peninsula was made ready for building. A ring of main roads as well as a light rail line and a rail had been set up before and were waiting for its elongation onto the peninsulal. Moreover some zones for public facilities, such as a police and a fire station, had to be hold available.
As a start a ringroad with an essential access-function was built and the rail was extended. At the angular point of the ringroad a train-station, including a holding and turning track to guarantee a perfect connection of the new housing district. The light rail was laid within the alley further onto the alley and a terminal loop with an integrated station was built at the peninsula's head.
The remaining exploitation was effected by minor roads. Along these roads building sites were devided into quite small pieces. In the end noise abatement walls were built along the rail to meet the requirements of the law.

Hellmand is surrounded by water...

Even more new building ground could be made accessible on the Hellmand Peninsula. Here the focus also lay on a gentle, scenically high-level closure of the existing city structures. For this the whole peninsula, a motorway-junction a the connection to the island's "mainland" should be developed as a housing district as well.
Anyhow, to achieve the aim of a good connection to the public transport the red light rail line was split in the centre of Hellmand and one on the tracks was directed onto the peninsula. The tracks mainly lie within an alley and a major road and connect the district by to stations. The further exploitation is effected by minor roads in this quarter as wll as in Binsenberg. And also the small building grounds can be found in Hellmand again.
Noise abatement walls hold back the noise and exhaust fumes coming from the alley from poluting the residential streets. They see to a save and quiet neighborhood with severeal parks an a high quality of life, the roaring sea almost all around it fron Lärmschutzwände halten Abgase und Lärm der Allee aus den Wohnstraßen fern und sorgen für.

The Kolibir-Peninsula rises high...

The Kolibir-Peninsula was made accessible by a one-way-street-ring for a quite long time. This ring was now expanded by another half ring and more building grounds were accounted, earmarked for high-density housing. Within a very short time severals high rises were built here. Because of the attractive location by the water the appartements can be hired out for expansive rates. The subway was extended into the quarter, due to the fact of the unexpected fast growth.

The southern track field of the central station...

Some parts of the district south of the central station were built in a quite high density. Nonetheless the railway had to be woven out in three directions. So, some flying junctions had tu be built. In addition to that the tracks of a tram-line go as an elevated rail through the area. The housing district admidts the track field is accordingly less attractive.

To the island's shore the building density decreases...

To the island's shore the building density and height decreases. A zone of medium density is followed by a detached housing area, both devided by a highly used alley. To minimise the noise polution in the surrounding housing districts, noise barriers have been errected on both sides of the alley. By the stepped height of the building a maximum of the flats get a direct view over the water.
